Football Ministry in Haiti
Ambassadors Football Haiti began in 2006. We started by mobilizing the nation for football ministry as a high priority, and by 2015 we had trained over 400 coaches and workers to share the Good News through football.
After 2015, we began a football camp for the children of Haiti that has grown to be a popular ministry program each year. Our ministry is directed by a Haitian leader who grew up as a player in the ministry. He and his staff currently coach players between the ages of 6 and 15 on a weekly basis and continue the tradition of training our players to love God and football.
In early 2024, we launched a project that will turn a dirt field at a local church into a state-of-the-art football facility.
Our History
Our story begins with Jonathan Ortlip who grew up as a missionary kid in Haiti. He became the founder of Ambassadors Football but never had the opportunity to start a ministry there until God put him in touch with Rich Mears.
In 2006, after being trained by Ambassadors Football in the U.S., Rich Mears founded Ambassadors Football in Haiti and trained over 400 coaches and workers in Football Ministry before turning the work over in 2015.
On January 12, 2010 there was a huge earthquake in Haiti that killed over 250,000 people. By God's grace, Rich Mears and his family survived the earthquake and their rented house was not destroyed.
Within a few months, Rich came in contact with Dr. Fred Sorrels of Operation Go Quickly who wanted to start a soccer team for men who had lost a leg during the earthquake. Together they formed and trained the first Haitian National Amputee Soccer team and sent them off to their first Amputee Soccer World Cup in Argentina.
They have played in every Amputee World Cup since, and in 2024 they came in 4th place! The new field and training facility will be the home field for the Haitian Amputee Soccer team in Haiti!
From 2015 to 2017, John Boggs, also a missionary kid who grew up in Haiti, was the director of Ambassadors Football Haiti and founded the camp ministry.
From 2017 to present the director of Ambassadors Football Haiti has been Jean Lucasse Henrilus, a Haitian young man who started playing soccer under Rich Mears and his staff at the age of 12. He and his staff currently coach players between the ages of 6 and 15 on a weekly basis and continue the tradition of training their players to love God and football!
Club Teams
We have club teams that practice and play weekly in Port-au-Prince. We are focused on coaching our players to football excellence with a focus on teaching them to be obedient to God’s word through their play and in their lives off the field.
This is done by teaching Gospel themes during our time together and creating character-building exercises in addition to football skills.
Our club also enables us to bring coaches alongside of our established coaches to learn more about how to lead a team with a faith-based focus. These volunteer coaches also have the opportunity to then be trained by Ambassadors through our TREC training course.
Football Tournaments
Unfortunately, in Haiti there are almost no organized youth tournaments for players and teams to participate in.
Due to this unfortunate situation, our National Director Lucasse and his team try and organize at least one tournament a year so their players and those from other clubs in the area can compete against each other.
These tournaments always include an evangelism element so the players and those watching can all hear about a life lived for God through salvation in Jesus Christ.
Haitian National Amputee Team
In 2010, Rich Mears and Dr. Fred Sorrels of Operation Go Quickly founded the first Haitian National Amputee Soccer Team, made up of men who lost a leg in that year’s devastating earthquake.
Lucasse, now Director of Ambassadors Football Haiti, served as head coach of the team in 2015–2016 and led them to the Amputee Copa America in Mexico. The current head coach was mentored by Lucasse and other Ambassadors Football staff.
Since then, the team has competed in every Amputee World Cup—finishing 4th in 2024! Their new field and training facility will serve as the team’s official home in Haiti.
Football Camps
Ambassadors Soccer Camps provide an opportunity for children ages 6-14 years the chance to play and compete in a fun, safe, and positive environment.
Central to camps is a strong faith element and the campers day includes time together to learn more about the Bible and what salvation in Jesus looks like.
We will be launching camps soon, after we finish building the new Ambassadors Football Training Centre!
Haiti Field Project
We have partnered with Quisqueya Chapel to turn a dirt field into a state of the art Ambassadors Football Training Centre. We’re almost fully funded and hoping to finish construction August 15, 2025!

Our Vision for the Haiti Training Centre
Football
A seven-a-side artificial turf fenced in field with lights in the heart of Port-au-Prince, minutes from the Canadian Embassy, Quisqueya Christian School, and the businesses that line Delmas, the major street in Port-au-Prince.
Faith
Haiti is in danger of losing an entire generation to gang warfare and urban violence.
Ambassadors Football Haiti’s Training Centre will provide a safe place for recreation with a purpose.
We will use this facility to share the love and hope of Jesus with the children, families, and adults of Haiti who will come to play soccer, but possibly leave filled with the Holy Spirit and the hope of Eternal Life!
Future
A Dream come True
As a 12 year old boy, Lucasse Henrilus, the current director of Ambassadors Football Haiti always hoped he could play on a turf field just like the one at the national stadium.
Programs
Through our coaching, soccer camps and training ministries we hope to point everyone who comes to the field to a better future through knowing Jesus!
Sustainability
By renting out the field to local soccer clubs, individuals, and businesses, we can generate income to maintain the field and make it a place where our partners can work with us to reach those who need to know Jesus.
Community Outreach
Several times a year we hold soccer clinics and outreach events in the poorer neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince.
We typically give the participants food and then play soccer with them and close out the event with a clear Gospel presentation and invitation to know and accept Jesus as their Savior.
Playing Tours
Another form of community outreach that we have done in Haiti is playing tours. During these tours we visit orphanages and play with local teams while sharing the Gospel before and after our games.
Coaches Training
Drawing on years of experience, Ambassadors Football has developed various ways in which to train individuals and churches how to use football for ministry.
This course includes classroom and on-field training delivered by highly certified, licensed tutors, and experienced missionaries.
The main focus of the program is to train Christian coaches to influence others and in the process mentor and disciple their players in Christ.
